unruh2525 The reason I love this record is that it's dark and fanged and evil without any clanking chains (though chains do clank) or echoing footsteps. Grandiose and innovative at the same time.

about

In late 1995 i bought a Tascam 244 Porta-Studio from a co-worker. Previous to this, i did all my recording on a boombox that would allow you to tape something, place it in the second deck and dub over it. I think it simply had a broken erase head. Upon acquiring this early 80's machine i was sent into an obsession with multitrack recording. I would spend every single day after work, and all weekend, experimenting. These pieces are the very first recordings i made with the Tascam. Simultaneous to these recordings i was working with two other guys on the first recordings by Murderous Vision. Although, those were being done at a "real" digital ADAT studio. At the time, i had a very minimal gear collection, and whatever i could borrow from others at the time. The only traditional pieces of gear i had were a Boss DS-330 Dr. Synth, microphone and a broken guitar. I borrowed and used on some of these pieces some kind of Yamaha drum machine and Alesis sampler. Most of the sampling was however done with loop cassettes and handheld cassette recorders.
While these pieces are a bit drawn out and contain several bleeps, overloads and mistakes, they also have some great moments. Most importantly, i learned that i could really do anything i wanted. I didn't need to tolerate working with a couple of assholes i couldn't stand in order to make music. I was a viable entity all my own. I felt unstoppable and artistically fulfilled for the first time in my life. Over the next six years i used this very 4-Track exclusively for everything i recorded. These recordings are raw. as they came off the outputs of the machine. I did absolutely no processing of the raw tapes. Simply made digital the recordings. They contain all the tape hiss and mechanical sounds. As they were recorded. Up until now, these pieces have never been released or even heard by anyone but me. Stephen Petrus October 12th 2013
